Samsung unveils first 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM for mobiles
Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of high-capacity, low-power memory components that will be able to drive the next generation of mobile devices with the ability to handle more demanding applications.
“By initiating mass production of 12Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM in an extremely timely manner, we now are not only helping OEMs to accelerate their moves to the next generation of mobile devices, but providing functionality that will give mobile consumers greatly enhanced user experiences”, said Joo Sun Choi, EVP of Samsung’s memory division.
The company said it is capable of building a 6-gigabyte mobile DRAM by combining four 12Gb chips, which will provide an improved environment to run high-end content such as Ultra HD videos on smartphones.
It won’t be long before flagships are sporting 6GB of RAM, though, as Samsung has just announced the industry’s first 12GB LPDDR4 based on its 20-nanometer process technology.
KitGuru Says: The ability to install 6GB of memory into a smartphone or tablet will enable Samsung to considerably increase performance of its products.
There are several advantages to using Samsung’s new high-density DRAM over existing chips. Whether we need more memory in our phones right now is unclear, but no doubt developers will make use of the added RAM over time. The new RAM now offers the highest mobile RAM speeds available, as well as energy efficiency and a design that allows it to fit in devices that now have 3GB RAM. In fact, Samsung not so subtly hints that its next gen flagships would indeed sport such a feature.
