Samsung Urges Consumers Globally To Stop Using Galaxy Note 7
Local budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air has banned the use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 during its flights, following global reports that the smartphone’s batteries exploded or caught fire.
“Garuda Indonesia asks all passengers not to operate mobile phone during flight due to the advisory from the FAA on the use of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone”, he said in a statement. A probe indicated that the rechargeable lithium batteries, produced by one of its suppliers, were the cause of the fires. All Note 7 users, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said, should power them down and stop charging or using the device. “There aren’t many users of the phone just yet, but we need to remind them that the device is risky”, Garuda Indonesia Services Director Nicodemus P. Lampe said.
The recall of the Galaxy Note 7 could invariably affect the release date of Samsung’s follow-up flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, as per rumors.
Qantas and Virgin Australia also told customers not to use or charge the devices on their planes.
Any UK customers who have Galaxy Note 7 devices will be able to return their devices to Samsung, which will in collaboration with its partners and operators, voluntarily replace their current device with a new one.
The airline also advised that the passenger will not be allowed to store the device in their checked luggage.
