Samuel DuBose Shooting: No Charges for Two Officers Who Responded
The a pair of other University of Cincinnati officers, Phillip Kidd and David Lindenschmidt, were put on executive keep on Thursday.
The officer was indicted on murder and voluntary manslaughter charges in the July 19 death of Samuel DuBose.
University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing has already been charged with murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 43-year-old Samuel DuBose, who was fatally shot within minutes of being pulled over for driving without a front license plate on July 19.
Videos from their body cameras show both Kidd and Lindenschmidt at the scene, listening to Tensing say he was dragged and agreeing that’s what happened.
“Sam would have never did to that police officer what that police officer did to Sam”, Allen said.
Another day, another argument for body cameras, and for tough, uniform policies to make them work.
“Ever since the bond was set, I’ve received calls from around the country from people wanting to contribute to it”, Mathews said. His lawyer has said he feared for his life.
DuBose calmly asks why he was pulled over and eventually tells Tensing that he left his license at home.
And prosecutors questioned why he bothered to try to stop DuBose from leaving in the first place. He also stood by the officers who remain on the force.
“We’re getting pushed to ignore those imaginary lines on the map”, Jeff Corcoran, then the interim chief of the University of Cincinnati police, told The Associated Press in an interview past year.
DuBose’s death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with African-Americans, especially those killed by officers. After Tensing says,”he was dragging me”, Kidd responds, “Yeah, I saw that”.
Deters was shocked when he got access to watch the body camera footage of the shooting, which clearly showed DuBose acting in a completely non-violent manner towards Tensing. More universities are adding officers and arming them, insisting they can better police and protect students than municipal officers. The footage below, released by the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s office and synced by The Guardian, shows the vantage point of Tensing, Kidd and Lindenschmidt in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
Two University of Cincinnati police officers who were present when a colleague shot and killed a motorist were placed on paid leave, a university spokesman said Thursday, while a judge set bail of $1 million for the officer at the center of the case. “If you slow down this tape you see what happens, it is a very short period of time from when the auto starts rolling to when a gun is out and he’s shot in the head”.
Three of these officers were charged for shooting people during or after traffic stops, which can be tense encounters for police and drivers alike. “And I realize what this was going to mean to our community, and it really broke my heart because it’s just bad”. They say Tensing stopped the vehicle and a struggle ensued after DuBose failed to provide a driver’s license and refused to get out of the auto.
