San Bernardino Attack: Police Search Seccombe Lake
Bowdich, who wouldn’t comment on what the divers are looking for or when the suspects were at the lake, said the search might last for days.
An FBI dive team on Thursday searched a small, urban lake about 3 miles north of the shooting site, though it was unclear what they were looking for.
Islamic State said last week the couple were among its followers. They also say there was a missing hard drive from their home computer.
“As I said on day one, we will leave no stone unturned”, Bowdich said, warning that the “massive” investigation in San Bernardino would go on for some time and could include canvassing neighborhoods.
Her relatives told the Associated Press that she was due to receive a pin recognizing her as an inspector for the local Department of Public Health at the holiday luncheon where a married couple opened fire on December 2.
Marquez and Farook “were plotting an actual attack” that year, including buying weapons, but became apprehensive and shelved the plan because of law enforcement activity and arrests in the area, said Idaho Sen.
The revelation came as FBI investigators discovered photos of local schools on Farook’s phone, suggesting that the couple may have been targeting those sites as part of a far larger attack than previously known, according to theLos Angeles Times. FBI Director James Comey told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday that the two were radicalized well before Malik came to the USA on a fiance visa, and they had discussed jihad and martyrdom as early as 2013.
U.S. officials have said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is examining whether there were irregularities in how Malik was granted her visa.
Investigators said that about $28,000 had been deposited in an account in Farook’s name at Web Bank, an online bank based in Utah, in the weeks before the attack.
Investigators have described the probe into last week’s bloodshed – which saw 14 people killed and another 22 injured – as massive and painstaking, involving hundreds of interviews and stretching into at least two other countries.
Comey, along with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and John Mulligan, deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, briefed members of both houses of Congress on Thursday about the investigation in closed, classified sessions. But he added that he was troubled by the fact that the couple had tried to cover their tracks by destroying their cellphones and other electronic equipment.
Revelations that the San Bernardino attackers were radicalised years earlier, before Islamic State was created and before they met, has raised questions about how they slipped under the security radar.
He drew comparisons to heightened scrutiny law enforcement placed on Italian-American and Irish-American communities during past investigations of organised crime.
“There was never a danger to this community”, Bowdich said.
Federal authorities are expected to indict the former neighbor of San Bernardino killers Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik for purchasing two of the guns the shooters used in last week’s massacre.
