San Bernardino officer killed when his cruiser was struck by suspected
San Bernardino police officials say an on-duty officer was killed when his auto was struck by a suspected drunk driver at an intersection in Ontario. Hanes was rushed to Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident happened near West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, where initial reports indicated Hanes had just dropped off an inmate.
The officer was southbound on Etiwanda when the second vehicle driving eastbound on Fourth ran a red light and smashed into his auto, Russell said. San Bernardino police were expected to release the officer’s identity later Thursday morning.
The driver stayed at the crash scene and was arrested.
Ontario police determined that a 27-year-old Fontana motorist drove his vehicle through a red traffic light, slamming into Hanes’ patrolcar and sending it into a utility pole.
“Bryce was one of those guys who came to work every day with a great attitude”. “He got along with all of his coworkers and really loved his job”.
Hanes, 40, was married with three kids under 12.
Burguan said Hanes never received complaints and never had to be disciplined during his career.
“He literally has been an exemplary officer for this city”, Burguan said. Fourth Street is the dividing line.
The Ontario Police Department was the lead organization in the investigation. The crash occurred close to the start of his shift around 2 a.m., according to the San Bernardino Sunday.
