San Francisco board reaffirms status as immigrant sanctuary
“This bill is – so far, anyway – the ultimate alignment of Marco Rubio’s campaign platform with Donald Trump’s immigration policy”, Pablo Manriquez, the Democratic National Committee’s Hispanic media director, told Business Insider.
The bill offered by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., stated in a press release.
The Senate voted today against a bill to punish “sanctuary cities” and certain undocumented immigrants.
Cohen spoke firmly about the push for scrutiny of the policy, after the killing of 32-year-old Steinle at the hands of Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an unauthorized immigrant who had been five times deported to Mexico for various felonies including drug charges and had been released from a San Francisco jail shortly before the killing.
In addition to the funding penalties, Vitter’s bill would increase maximum prison terms for immigrants caught repeatedly crossing the border illegally, and it would impose mandatory minimum terms for convicted felons who have been deported and re-enter the country and for immigrants who have been convicted of illegal entry two times previously.
San Francisco supervisors have reaffirmed the city’s status as a sanctuary city by rejecting a resolution that encouraged cooperation with federal immigration officials involving prisoners in local jails.
The legislation blocked in the Senate stems from the July 1 shooting of Kate Steinle in San Francisco. “Americans are exhausted of seeing their laws flouted and their communities plagued by the frightful crime that typically accompanies illegal immigration”, said Cruz.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said Vitter’s bill would not have prevented Steinle’s death. San Francisco protects repeat offenders unless they have a violent felony conviction within seven years. The bureau has disputed that assertion, saying it turned Sanchez over to local authorities at the request of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
Murphy said the bill would have put as much as $20 million in annual federal policing grants for Connecticut in jeopardy. “It’s risky and irresponsible”. Newark’s police renewed a policy to not honor immigration requests to detain immigrants arrested for minor offenses in 2013, when then-Mayor Cory Booker first ran for Senate. When residents feel comfortable contacting the police to report a crime, everyone is safer.
The Board stated that local law enforcement will not be required to notify federal authorities of the Immigration Customs and Enforcement know of the release of unauthorized immigrants. Steinle’s death prompted a flurry of legislation in Congress against sanctuary cities, and one bill passed in the House in July.
Earlier this week, Republicans tried to pass Senate Bill 2146, the “Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act”, but did not have enough votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster.
Cruz said Democrats were choosing “to value partisan loyalty to the Obama White House over protecting the lives of children who will be murdered by violent criminal illegal aliens in sanctuary cities if this body does not act”.
Cruz’s remarks come ahead of a procedural vote on ending debate on whether to take up stand-alone legislation from Sen.
“Tragedies should not be used to scapegoat immigrants”, Menendez said.
