San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies – 7/11/15 Major League Baseball Pick, Odds, and
Also note that the Giants are coming off a days rest and the Phillies have been shut out in their last 2 games against solid pitchers.
“Hamels certainly fits the description of an ace pitcher, but a $24 million salary, 20-team no-trade list and the Phillies’ inability to receive an offer close to their asking price has kept him in Philly”, writes Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Joe Panik and Hunter Pence each hit home runs and Matt Duffy and Justin Maxwell had four hits each as the Giants scored 15 runs on 22 hits. “We had a pretty good cushion there and if there’s any time I can save some bullets with him I’m going to do it”.
“We’ve got to find a way to get some runs”.
The question remains in my mind however: can the Phillies go 21-53 in their last 74 games to set a franchise record with 112 losses in one season?
“He was all over the place”, Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin said of Hamels, who allowed career highs in runs (nine) and hits (12) in 3 1/3 innings. He didn’t have command. 189 with one extra-base hit in his past 24 games.
“Quality at-bats, just getting the pitch you really wanted and no chasing anything”, said Pagan when asked about the approach against Hamels. “We had some guys who had been struggling”. “He’s that good and he’s fun to watch”. We all know he’s much better that. “We know what we can do, what we’re capable of”.
Bumgarner allowed eight hits with seven strikeouts and said he “felt OK” about his start. He leads all pitchers with 10 hits. 500 after being shutout in back-to-back games against the Dodgers, while the Giants are stumbling to the break with eight losses in their last nine games. Or, Sanchez could be Carlos Ruiz’s replacement at catcher.
Ruiz scored both the Phillies’ runs and finished a triple shy of the cycle. There is a lot of value in a starter who you can give the ball to in the playoffs and know that he will keep you in the game, and possibly dominate your opponent on any given day. It was the Giants’ fifth slam of the season.
It’s been said Hamels would block trades to the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays, but the left-hander recently expressed he’s open to all ideas and scenarios. Maikel Franco is the only offensive bright spot, but one player can not turn a team around.
A Posey single to left loaded the bases for the third time in the inning, and Pence finally cleaned up the mess, smacking a 2-1 pitch down the right field line and over the wall for his third home run of the season. That was supposed to be easier said than done with All-Stars Madison Bumgarner and Cole Hamels facing off on the mound, but the Giants took their frustration out on Hamels in a big way with a 15-2 victory. Hamels and Bumgarner have opposed each other just once with Hamels giving up three runs in seven innings and Bumgarner yielding one over seven in the Phillies’ 5-3, 10-inning win in San Francisco on August 15.
It was Hamels’ shortest outing since going three innings on September 8, 2011.
On the pitching side, the Phillies are 29th in ERA (4.66), earned runs (401), and walks (284); 27th in quality starts (34), and K/BB (2.23); and tied for last in WHIP (1.47).
