San Francisco news crews robbed at gunpoint, cameras stolen during live report
Two television crews reporting on a deadly shooting in San Francisco have been robbed at gunpoint close to where the original incident happened.
The video shows Cara Liu from KTVU getting ready to begin her report when she says “Hold on, hold on, wait” and runs off camera. That was because the NBC crew was being mugged nearby.
When a photographer from KTVU tried to intervene, the robber took both of their cameras at gunpoint.
This was just the latest incident in which news crews have been robbed and attacked in the Bay area. “Sorry, there’s an incident out here”.
“I thought I was going to hear a click”, the photographer said afterwards.
The crews were there reporting on the shooting of Kathryn Steinle, a 32-year-old woman killed on Wednesday evening at Pier 14 in San Francisco. We also met with the Oakland Police Department on several initiatives, including: “direct communication with area captains; safety training; parking passes; and stats on crimes involving media in a ongoing effort to protect news crews”. Representatives for KTVU could not be reached by Reuters on Thursday morning.
The assailants fled the scene in a black BMW and remained at large on Thursday afternoon, she said. One of them reportedly had dreadlocks. “Numerous guards are ex- police officers”, SFGate reports. Waples was then thrown to the ground and hit in the ear with the gun.
