Sanchez gets 2 more hits, but Yankees blanked by Baltimore
You’re going to have those days where you’re 0-for-4 and days where you’re 4-for-4.
The Yankees got 18 hits and drew seven walks.
The hesitant no response showed the disappointment and Sanchez, like a little kid, bowed his head down and had a smile. They pulled to within 2.5 games of Baltimore in the chase for the second AL Wild Card after NY again drubbed the Orioles on Saturday, 13-5.
Coming off a pair of blowout victories, the Yankees were blanked at home for the first time in more than a year Sunday, 5-0 by Kevin Gausman and the Baltimore Orioles.
Ripe with talent at all levels of the Minors and even within the Major League club, there’s no more impressive player in the organization than Gary Sanchez.
The Mets, who hit four homers for the second straight game, have won four in a row and six of their last seven and are 2 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the race for the National League’s second wild-card spot. He tossed 7.0 innings, on seven hits and had nine strikeouts.
Those hits were more than enough for Gausman (6-10), who often has received low run support.
“If someone says you’re going to win a series against Baltimore, I think you’re going to be pretty positive”, NY manager Joe Girardi said.
So there is something special about a youngster who is making history in the Bronx.
The Yankees chances still aren’t that good, in part because the Orioles are much better than they looked Friday and Saturday and in part because it’s very hard to make up ground in such a crowded race.
The adjustment is becoming an all-around hitter.
Gausman followed the fourth with two strong innings before his final inning, which also featured some nifty defense.
Sanchez also singled in the fourth, but he was thrown out when he tried to take third on Mark Teixeira’s single to right.
BOSTON – Boston snapped a three-game losing streak by rapping out 12 hits, including three home runs, and Dustin Pedroia just missed tying a record for consecutive at-bats with a hit in a win against Kansas City at Fenway Park. You can’t expect the youngster to hit a ball out of the yard with every at bat, But the Yankees, and from their expressions on the bench, are all looking for that home run ball off his bat.
The Birds, now three games behind Toronto, would pull into a tie if they’re able to sweep the series. Because Gary Sanchez failed to hit a home run and wasn’t a run producer, the Yankees supposedly lost a game that would have got them closer in their wild card quest. “But obviously you want to win the game”. Sanchez entered Sunday’s game already leading his team’s position players in wins above replacement (WAR) on the year, according to Baseball-Reference.com. They may of just found a guy that can help them out in that category, Gary Sanchez.
The under is 26-11 in Baltimore’s last 37 on grass and is 30-13 in their last 43 overall while the Orioles are 6-20 in Gausman’s last 26 road starts. With two runners aboard, third baseman Manny Machado made a diving stop of a Starlin Castro scorcher and got a force out at second, and Gausman struck out Brian McCann to escape the inning unscathed. He went 0-for-3 with a walk, and still does not have a hit against left-handed pitching this season. “He doesn’t know how pitchers are going to have to approach him”. The way I see it winning four out of six games on the road against two good clubs is going to be hard. At the moment just savor and enjoy the incredible stretch this young player is on, and hope that he can keep it up this season and for the years to come.
