Sanchez hits another home run, Yankees rout Orioles 13-5
New York Yankees third base coach Joe Espada (53) reacts after New York Yankees designated hitter Gary Sanchez was tagged out trying to reach third from first on Mark Teixeira’s fourth-inning single in a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles in New York, Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016.
This was Gausman’s fourth fine start against the Yankees this season and he finally wound up with a win.
The Orioles had been getting battered by the Yankees this weekend, outscored 27-9.
“Every game you want to win”, said Aaron Hicks. They’ve won their last four games and outscored their opponents 37-10 in the process.
ASTROS 6, RAYS 2: Rookie Alex Bregman homered and had three RBI to back seven solid innings by Dallas Keuchel and lead Houston at home. He struck out nine and walked none to win his third start in a row.
Gausman posted a rare road victory after going 0-16 in his previous 25 starts away from Camden Yards.
Hardy’s throw appeared to be in time, but Gregorius neatly tucked in his right arm and extended his left arm across home plate.
“I think our guys believe”, said Girardi.
Thanks in large part to rookie phenom Gary Sanchez, the Yankees remain within striking distance of the second wild card spot.
The Yankees’ six-run second inning was a nightmare for the Orioles, who had taken a very temporary 1-0 lead on Machado’s 30th homer, into Monument Park, in the top of the first inning.
Sunday, the hard-hitting rookie catcher did not blast another homer – what, you thought that was an every day thing? – but he got two more hits.
Gausman’s last pitch resulted in a grounder that third baseman Manny Machado backhanded and threw from his knees from foul ground across the diamond for the out.
Carlos Gonzalez also hit a two-run homer off Petit, his 24th of the season and 200th of his career. Because Gary Sanchez failed to hit a home run and wasn’t a run producer, the Yankees supposedly lost a game that would have got them closer in their wild card quest.
“We’re playing good baseball and we’re winning series and that’s what we need to continue to do”, Girardi said.
With two outs and a runner on first, Nolan Reimold hit a hump-back line drive that dropped near Starlin Castro at second base.
Mark Teixiera capped the scoring in the big inning with an RBI single off reliever Vance Worley for his third RBI of the game. The slugger reached 40 home runs for the first time in his career and boosted Baltimore’s homer total to 204, most in the majors.
The veteran Teixeira said he and his teammates knew a transition was taking place, but none of them gave up on the season. “It’s such a lofty number”.
Jones was in the starting lineup despite leaving Thursday’s game in Washington with hamstring cramps.
It’s the first time they’ve allowed at least 18 hits in consecutive games since August 11-12, 1993, and their ERA in the last 11 games is a frightful 8.23. “Like I said, I just tried to make that play one hand, and finally I see the ball move [away] from me”. Chris Davis (109 in 2013), Jim Gentile (119 in 1961), Brady Anderson (120 in 1996) and Frank Robinson (123 in 1966) were faster. We might see some strikeouts.
Yankees: 3B Chase Headley didn’t start for the second straight day. “That’s my fault and I got to get better next time”. Ronald Torreyes doubled, too.
Orioles: In a matchup of AL East contenders, the O’s open a three-game series at home vs. Toronto on Monday night. LHP Wade Miley (8-10, 5.51 ERA) is 1-2 with an 8.18 ERA in five starts since the Orioles got him from Seattle at the trade deadline. RHP Marco Estrada (7-6, 3.47) pitches for the Blue Jays.
Righty Adam Warren, taking over for the Yankees, gave up two-strike single to Pearce, scoring two runs to widen the Yankees’ deficit to 3-0. Pretty spectacular. Now working with a 5-4 lead, the offense kicked things up a notch in the fifth inning.
