Sanders ad burst coincides with upward movement in polls
Hillary Clinton Wednesday defended her daughter’s attacks against her Democratic challenger Bernie Sanders’ single-payer health care plan, despite criticism the remark was inaccurate.
A poll released on Wednesday by Quinnipiac University showed Sanders winning 49 percent of likely Democratic caucus-goers in Iowa, compared to 44 percent for Clinton. “Bernie Sanders has it in spades, particularly with younger voters, and everything the Clinton campaign has tried hasn’t quite fired up a group of voters that I think a lot of us thought would be fired up”, Todd said.
Clinton campaign aides held a call with reporters Wednesday and called on Sanders to tell voters how he would pay for his single-payer health care plan, a key component of his populist campaign message.
Facing a narrowing primary contest, Hillary Clinton ripped into rival Bernie Sanders on Tuesday, saying the Vermont senator was offering unrealistic policies and overstating his anti-establishment credentials.
“Sanders to cast a vote against the entire package”, his campaign said in a statement.
To fight back, Clinton deployed her best asset, former President Bill Clinton, to campaign for her, only for GOP front-runner Donald Trump to brand him an “abuser”.
“I want to win, but I have a very long view about this”, she explained, “I’ve been organizing in the states that come after – South Carolina, Nevada – and in the states that come after that”.
Now, with his campaign locked in a tight race against Hillary Clinton in Iowa and New Hampshire, he’s facing attacks about inconsistencies in his voting record – raising questions that could undermine not only his presidential aspirations, but the brand he’s cultivated over the course of his political career.
Defending working and middle class families are central to both candidates’ campaigns, though Sanders has been even more outspoken in his pledge to combat income inequality.
She also accused Sanders of being a “pretty reliable vote for the gun lobby”.
The poll found that 48 percent of Democratic primary voters support Clinton, while 41 percent said they favor Sanders.
“Unfortunately, I have to say, as much as I admire Chelsea, she didn’t read the plan”, he said.
“We look forward to Secretary Clinton coming on board with that issue”, he said.
In an interview with MSNBC, Clinton called attention to Sanders’ past support for a bill that she called the National Rifle Association’s “most important priority in 20 years”.
