Sanders Throws His Weight Behind Rival Clinton
“A contentious Democratic primary fight ended Tuesday with hugs, handshakes and thank yous, as Bernie Sanders told supporters that their “political revolution” was dependent upon getting Hillary Clinton elected as the country’s next president”.
Democrats have coalesced around Clinton’s candidacy since she defeated Sanders in primaries last month in California and five other states, led by endorsements from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others. Ahead of the NY primary, he alleged that Clinton wasn’t qualified to be president – a statement he later walked back – after Clinton declined to say whether she thought Sanders was qualified.
“I can’t help but reflect on how much more enjoyable this election will be now that we are on the same side”, Clinton said of Sanders.
“I have come here to make it as clear as possible, as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton”, Sanders says to a cheering crowd. “She may be saying these things to win over Bernie Sanders’ supporters but I just don’t quite believe it”. Nevertheless, they both said they planned to enthusiastically support Clinton in the general election.
Some aspects of Sanders’ proposals – including raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour and making public colleges tuition-free for families making under $125,000 a year – have either been adopted by Clinton’s campaign or included in the Democratic Party’s draft platform, which is to be ratified at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia July 25-28. But he said there’s been a “significant coming together” on the party’s platform, which Sanders said has produced “by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party”.
“Over the years I’ve gotten to know him as a colleague and a friend”, she said.
B ernie Sanders appeared alongside Hillary Clinton at a joint rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on Tuesday, officially endorsing her in her upcoming battle against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. “Go Green or third party and we’ll put you in the White House…”
Sanders is the quintessential outsider, railing about rigged economies, rigged political systems and even rigged presidential nominating contests.
Also on Tuesday, a source with knowledge of the process said the Clinton campaign is vetting James Stavridis, a retired four-star Navy admiral, as a potential vice presidential running mate.
Sanders also questioned Clinton’s judgment based on her vote in favor of the Iraq War and her affiliation with a super PAC, and he criticized her decision to hold a “high-dollar fundraiser” at a hedge fund that invests in fracking, which he wants to end.
DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain told ABC News that “Sanders understands the movement he is leading, and he knows that he needs to make sure that our people are going to show up to the polls in November”.
Sam Weaver, 24, of Webster, Massachusetts, said there was nothing Clinton could say or do to win his support – and that he wasn’t yet convinced Sanders could not emerge the Democratic nominee. Twenty-two percent said they would vote for Trump, and 18% said they would vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson. Spokesman Michael Briggs said Sanders still supports holding a roll call vote at the convention to determine the nomination.
“She’s a crook, and I’m not going to vote for a crook”, Bailey said, adding that she would write in Sanders’ name on the November ballot. “It’s kind of hard to deny that”. “We’re supposed to get involved and make change from the ground up”.
