Sanders wants Democratic Party leader to resign
The former secretary of state will formally be nominated as her party’s presidential candidate in the November 8 election at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, which opens on Monday.
Clinton’s campaign hoped the nighttime lineup would overshadow a tumultuous start to the four-day convention. DNC officials also anxious about the singer’s comment in the same video that “I hate America”.
State Senate President Stanley Rosenberg of Amherst, also a delegate pledged to Clinton, is representing the state rather than his Hampshire-Franklin-Worcester County district – which voted overwhelmingly for Bernie Sanders.
“It’s slightly unique for Clinton and Trump because they’re incredibly well-known”, Pfeiffer said. “So, job one is convincing the Bernie delegates that she is worthy of their support”. And at least one Sanders’ delegate said there was talk of protests during Kaine’s acceptance speech.
“Bienvenidos a todos, bienvenidos a todos en nuestro pais, verdad, por que somos americanos, todos”, said Kaine, which translates to: “Welcome to everyone, welcome to everyone in our country, right, because we’re all Americans, all of us”.
In Kaine’s words, “I like to fight for right”.
“You don’t sleep”, said LaChapelle, 49, a member of the Democratic State Committee who is a delegate from the 1st Congressional District pledged to support presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Obama’s address all but wiped away earlier tumult in the convention hall that had exposed lingering tensions between Clinton and Sanders supporters.
In addition to changing perceptions about Clinton, a goal of the convention is to create a portrait of party unity in contrast to the GOP convention, something that may be made more hard following the Wikileaks email release that some Sanders supporters say confirms the party was working against the Vermont senator.
Half of Clinton’s own backers say they consider her only slightly or not at all honest, and more than one-third say she’s only slightly or not at all likable, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted this month. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., holds up a sign call calling for Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee to be fired, Sunday, July 24, 2016, in Philadelphia.
“They throw “party unity” around as if we’re supposed to jump for joy when they mention her name”, said Manuel Zapata, a Sanders delegate from California, referring to Clinton. When I see this, you know, ‘Crooked Hillary, ‘ or I see the, ‘Lock her up, ‘ it’s just ridiculous.
Sanders was among those due to speak on the first evening of the convention.
In some ways, Clinton’s speech will serve as a sequel to her 2008 “glass ceiling” speech, when she conceded the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama at the end of the presidential primaries.
Donald Trump on Monday dismissed as a “joke” claims by Hillary Clinton’s campaign that Russian Federation is trying to help Trump by leaking thousands of emails from the Democratic National Committee.
“Based on her ideas and her leadership, Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States”, Sanders said. “The haters are going to hate and the haters are going to keep bringing up all the conspiracy theory stuff”.
Among the things people may not know: Clinton’s Methodist faith is “very significant”, Verveer said, citing an influential youth minister who encouraged her to focus on the underserved, including arranging for her to babysit the children of migrant workers while they picked vegetables.
“(Vice presidents) tend to be people that want to be something, not do something”, he said.
In contrast, said Kirstein, Democrats can unite behind Clinton and “also our shared vision for an America that is stronger together, with an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top”.
“Often it comes down to the personal relationship (between the President and Vice President)”, he said. She said Clinton can’t change her feelings now.
Clinton and her campaign have grappled with a number of controversies, including her use of a private email server at the State Department as well as her handling of an attack on a USA consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Tim Kaine, gets a first spin in the national limelight on Saturday as the newly minted Democratic presidential ticket makes its debut in Miami. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democratic Party, said Monday “we’re done” with the controversy. “It’s long past time”.
