According to Walker, he had never purchased a lottery ticket before.
The organizer of a Powerball club in the Plainview-Bethpage area said Thursday morning she was still checking her group’s tickets and so far they had only found about $1,000 in winnings. The other winning tickets were sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California, and a Publix supermarket in Melbourne Beach, Florida.
The California Powerball jackpot victor was identified Thursday by her employer as a Pomona nurse, although lottery officials have yet to confirm the report.
Last Wednesday a winning ticket from Twin Falls won the Weekly Grand jackpot, a prize of $1,000 a week for an entire year after withholding taxes are paid by the Idaho Lottery.
Local television showed swarms of people, many cheering, descending on the Los Angeles convenience store where the California ticket was sold. And, of course, Wednesday’s jackpot, worth about $980M in cash (annuity $1.6B) came after 19 consecutive failed drawings.
“I’m very proud that the ticket was sold here”, the clerk, M. Faroqui, told the Sun.
None of the 18.8 million tickets purchased in MI matched the jackpot-winning numbers. They would still owe federal taxes, topping out at 39.6 percent. Powerball tickets are valid for one year from the drawing date. California Lottery officials say tickets with 5 of the 6 numbers were sold in Santa Monica, Gardena, Redlands, Pacoima, Tustin, Chula Vista, Nipton, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Vacaville, Cloverdale and Irwindale.
The retailer will receive $100,000 for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.
Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, D.C. and two U.S. territories.
The cycle will start again on Saturday night when the next Powerball drawing will have an estimated jackpot of $40 million, according to the lottery operator’s website. The association oversees the Powerball Lottery, but management rotates annually among member states.
