Sania Grabs Australian Open Doubles
In a flawless climax to their stupendous run, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were crowned the Australian Open women’s doubles champions after taming the spirited Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets, in Melbourne on Friday.
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis came up with another stupendous performance on Friday to win the Australian Open women’s doubles title at the Rod Laver Arena.
“Hopefully, we will be back to defend our title next year”, Hingis said. They also bagged for themselves several titles at Sydney and Brisbane International events that were held before Australian Open Campaign.
‘When I saw that ball [on match point] floating, going out, I was very relieved. Her doubles successes haven’t convinced her to make a return to singles, which she hasn’t played in almost 10 years.
There was a chink of light when the Czech pair broke Hingis at 2-5 as she was serving for the championship, but they were then broken themselves as the accolades went to their opponents.
Sania said it was a tough moment for her to play against her partner.
Sania and Martina, who are both individually ranked No. 1 in the world, carried the momentum into the second set to break Julia and Karolina in the first and third games to go 4-0 up.
This is their third consecutive grand slam after winning the Wimbledon and US Open previous year.
The victory against Czechs Andreal Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka was Santina’s 36th win on the trot. Raonic is aiming to advance to his first Grand Slam final after losing in the semifinal at Wimbledon in 2014 in his only previous final-four match.
“I think they’re just playing so solid, so strong in every aspect of the game and that’s why you have to bring your best level”.
“We were pushed to the limit today, especially in the first set”, Hingis said. The ground-strokes have always been my strength and I have working on my backhand of late.
