Sania-Martina wins US Open women’s doubles title
If Swiss ace Roger Federer has his SABR (Sneaky Attack by Roger), India’s tennis veteran Leander Paes could well call his forehand victor (at 7-7 in the super tie-breaker) against Americans Sam Querrey and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Friday’s US Open mixed doubles final SABL (Sneaky Attack by Leander).
Australian left-hander Dellacqua, 30, had been seeking her first Grand Slam doubles crown but settles for a sixth runner-up showing, including the 2013 U.S. and Australian Opens and Wimbledon plus the 2008 and 2015 French Opens.
“Sania also have been good with her performances in the women’s category and by the time she hangs her boots she would have left a legacy behind for youngsters to follow”, Dravid said.
The Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar took to Facebook to congratulate Paes for such a wonderful victory. He was noticed at the event even this year along with his contemporaries like Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli.
Mirza said: “It has been a great year for us”. “It’s a great year for us”. He then won both points on his serve to close out the match hitting an overhead victor on their first championship point and then lifting Hingis in celebration.
On Wednesday, Mirza and Hingis saw off the challenge of Taipei girls Yung-Jan Chan and Hao-Ching Chan 7-6(5) 6-1. The tricolour flew at the USA major once again, thanks to 42-year-old Pales who now has nine Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.
Hingis also has a chance to add another in the women’s doubles final with India’s Sania Mirza on Sunday. “Obviously our games match, kind of complement each other, so to say, with her at the net and me at the back”.
“Congratulations, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis on the phenomenal victory at the US Open”. Before ligament injuries in both ankles spoilt her career in 2002, the Swiss sensation had won five Grand Slam singles titles (Australian Open – 1997, 98, 99), Wimbledon (1997) and US Open (1997). “We’re the No.1 team in the world, so we have to keep building on this”. Sania won her first Wimbledon, for me it is bonus. “I would rather win, alongside Sania and Leander, Grand Slam titles”, she said, “than having to struggle with my body”. They beat competitors Yaroslava Shvedova and Casey Dellacqua with a score of 6-3 6-3 to claim the first position proving that they truly make a power-packed team.
