Palin said she chose to back Trump “over some friends who are running”, including some she’d endorsed in their non-presidential races such as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, because she believes the businessman has the skills needed now. Aside from the headline-grabbing attention this gives the headline-seeking Palin, the endorsement allows Trump to aggressively step up his attacks on Cruz without as much fear that the attacks will boomerang among evangelicals in Iowa and elsewhere.

“What the heck does the Establishment know about conservatism?” she said. “Crisscrossing Iowa today, shaking hands, trump building the hype, promising a mystery guest tonight, refusing to confirm who it would be”.

“I would ask Sarah Palin to take a look at who Trump has said he might have as his VP”.

If there was palpable excitement about Palin’s endorsement among Trump fans on Tuesday, the news could irk some leaders on the right who do not view Trump as conservative enough on social issues like women’s reproductive issues.

Palin argued that Trump would be tough when it comes to foreign policy, like negotiating over the US sailors who were temporarily captured by Iran last week.

“I think a lot about the Department of Energy, because energy is my baby… He, deciding that America would apologise, and as part of the deal, as the enemy sends a message to the rest of the world that they capture and we kowtow, and we apologise, and the we bend over and say, ‘Thank you enemy.’ We are ready for a change!”

At a rally in the Hawkeye State Tuesday, Palin delivered an embarrassingly incoherent and rambling speech endorsing the billionaire Republican. Ted Cruz in Iowa.
