Saudis call on Myanmar to allow Rohingyas to return
The indiscriminate and systematic attacks against Muslims by extremist elements and some associated with government security forces of Myanmar have resulted in significant loss of life and exacerbated a history of discrimination and desperation.
“We can’t do anything if there are no people from our national races … that is their rightful place”. The Rohingya are not refugees.
Heavy rain has turned roads into mud, with refugees huddling under shelters of bamboo and plastic sheets beside them.
Rohingya in India voiced worries that they were being unfairly tainted by the allegations and sought more understanding for their plight.
Earlier, Mr Singh said government is committed for good governance.
Ethnic Rakhine believe foreign aid agencies ignore their needs and are biased towards the Rohingya-a minority denied citizenship in Myanmar and branded “Bengali” outsiders.
It also contended that since they were refugees from another country, they had no rights under the Indian constitution. “They have to be protected”.
Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has ordered to release $15 million aid for the Rohingya refugees leaving Myanmar due to genocide and torture against them in Rakhine state.
The commission, appointed past year by Suu Kyi, asked for freedom of movement for the refugees as well as recommending the government revise the country’s citizen rights law, which does not recognize the Rohingya as one of the country’s ethnic groups and denies them citizenship.
He said the matter was being heard by the apex court and “whatever decision will be taken, it will be taken by the Supreme Court”.
Myanmar’s army chief called on Thursday for people internally displaced by violence in Rakhine State to go home and rebuild communities, but he made no mention of 422,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled to Bangladesh to escape his force’s operations.
“The issue of national security is involved with regard to illegal immigration, which our country can not undermine”, Mr. Singh said. This week Suu Kyi used her first speech on the crisis to defend her country’s actions. “I ask who will take care of those three lakh refugees?” he added. “Nevertheless we are concerned to hear that numbers of Muslims are fleeing across the border to Bangladesh”, she said.
On September 14, India sent 53 tonnes of relief material to Bangladesh for the Rohingya, who have poured into that country following the violence in Myanmar.
The UN office in Bangladesh said on Monday that around 415,000 refugees have entered the country since August 25 after the Myanmarese army launched a crackdown on the minority Rohingya community in view of a series of attacks on security personnel.
