Savannah River Site Nuclear Facility on Lockdown after “Security Event”
“Site barricades are now closed to incoming traffic”, the post said.
Officials said the event was declared after electronic and canine scans of a vendor delivery truck indicated a possibility of explosive residue on the truck.
Law enforcement from South Carolina and Georgia are on the scene. But shortly before 6 p.m., the site released a statement saying no residue had been confirmed.
A DoE spokeswoman at Savannah River said the plant was still in lockdown, meaning no one was allowed to enter, but employees were free to leave for the day.
The incident happened in the site’s H Area and no one is being let into the nuclear facility.
SRS is a 310-square-mile nuclear weapons complex mostly in Aiken and Barnwell counties near the Georgia border. It now purifies highly enriched uranium for commercial purposes, Reuters stated.
When more specific information is available, including further media contact information, it will be provided to you through the Site’s public information staff.
The Aiken Standard, quoting a source on the nuclear processing site, reported it involved a bomb sniffing dog alerting on a vehicle. As a precaution, bomb detecting units were brought in to assess the situation.
