SC a bumpy campaign trail for Jeb Bush
Governor Nikki Haley’s endorsement of Marco Rubio could help the Florida senator solidify his hold on third place in the upcoming South Carolina Republican primary.
Haley endorsed Mitt Romney a month before South Carolina’s 2012 presidential primary and campaigned with him. Haley will appear alongside Rubio at his Chapin, S.C. town hall Wednesday night. A full 74% of Republicans said that Bush had the right kind of experience to be president, compared to Trump’s 60%.
Haley, the second Indian American to be elected governor and first woman to hold the post in SC, resurfaced on the national scene previous year after the racially motivated church shooting in Charleston.
She said she made the decision in part as a mother “who wants her children to be safe in our country”, and in part as the “military wife of a combat veteran”.
If Trump does file suit, Cruz said he would consider being personally involved.
He gave a blistering press conference in which he claimed that Mr Rubio and Mr Trump “have relied upon utter fabrications” to try and undermine his campaign. On Tuesday, Haley said Trump represents “everything a governor doesn’t want in a president”. Cruz edged out Trump in Iowa, but Trump has called for those results to be voided thanks to what he views as controversial actions taken by the Cruz campaign telling Ben Carson supporters their candidate was about to drop out.
Trump threatened earlier in the week to bring a defamation lawsuit against Cruz over a television ad that attacks the Republican front-runner’s conservative bona fides. “Even in the annals of frivolous lawsuits, this takes the cake”, the Texas senator warned.
On Wednesday, Bush called Trump “a bully” best dealt with by a “punch back in the nose”.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) trailed with 19% support, followed by Sen.
The NBC poll also shows both Cruz and Rubio easily trouncing Trump if it were a two-man race.
Rubio, hoping to overtake Cruz for second place in SC, where Trump leads in the polls, accused Cruz of spreading falsehoods with an ad attacking Rubio over his position on immigration.
Rubio continued his assault against Cruz’s campaign tactics.
“I’ve never seen a human being lie so much”, said Mr Trump.
Ted Cruz has already had one of his ads pulled off the air concerning Senator Rubio because it was totally false.
These findings are more consistent with the NBC/WSJ poll, which also surveyed opinions on the Supreme Court, and found that 43% support Obama nominating the next justice with 42% opposing him. Bernie Sanders. Saturday’s Nevada caucuses are next for them, with a SC primary on February 27.
