Robert Loggia, a prolific and versatile character actor best known for roles in Scarface and Big, has died.
Audrey Loggia, his wife, confirmed the sad news of the veteran actor’s passing. “He loved being an actor and he loved his life”.
She also revealed that she and her daughter Cynthia were at Robert’s bedside when he passed away.
Loggia earned an Oscar nomination for his supporting role as a private detective, Sam Ranson, in 1985’s “Jagged Edge“. He delivered several of the film’s most iconic lines, including “don’t get high on your own supply”; the film was a particularly big influence on the development of hip hop, and that line has been frequently quoted by some of the genre’s biggest stars.
He and Tom Hanks performed together on The Big Piano at FAO Schwartz in the movie’s most memorable scene, playing “Heart and Soul” and “Chopsticks”.
Native of Staten Island, Loggia was born to Italian immigrants and started his carrier by performing plays in NY. At the beginning of his career, he tried newspaper work, as he had studied journalism at the University of Missouri, nonetheless he was interested in acting and soon went to school at the Actors Studio.
Loggia’s other screen credits include the military adviser to President Whitmore in the ’90s blockbuster, “Independence Day”, and made appearances in three of the “Pink Panthers” films from Blake Edwards.
Loggia was nominated for an Emmy in 1989 for his portrayal of FBI agent Nick Mancuso in the series “Mancuso FBI” – which has a spin-off of the character he created in the “Favorite Son” miniseries starring Harry Hamlin – and again in 2000 for his guest star role in “Malcolm in the Middle”.
Let’s relive one of the man’s most classic moments…
Loggia was first married to Marjorie Sloane, whom he married in 1954 and divorced in 1981.
