Scarlett Johansson and Alicia Keys Are Dedicated To AIDS Movement
December 1 is celebrated as World AIDS Day. Many organizations and individuals are working towards bringing attention to the global epidemic. Lack of access to proper treatment for many is a concern. In the past many celebrities have come forth to champion the cause.
The Hollywood celebrity power for AIDS awareness was initiated by Dame Elizabeth Taylor in the 1980s. She was among the first celebrities to voice opinion and support the movement to end the deadly AIDS virus. Since Taylor took the lead, many international stars came forward to advocate AIDS awareness and work towards an AIDS-free world.
Among the most devoted Hollywood celebrities, who spoke out on December 1 were Scarlett Johansson, Alicia Keys, Bono, and Lady Gaga.
Alicia Keys started “We Are Here Movement”, an organization that is involved in funding anti-retroviral therapy for AIDS patients. Keys also lends support to orphanages for children who are HIV positive. She co-founded “Keep a Child Alive” for children with HIV positive parents who are not able to provide adequate care for them. Alicia Keys spoke at several occasions at the UN on HIV. She, Lady Gaga, and Bono have also sung at various AIDS concerts and hosted fundraisers on a social media platform for the cause.
Scarlett Johansson received a lot of attention on her HIV/AIDS awareness talk in 2006 when admitted to getting tested for HIV twice a year. She travelled to Rwanda two years later and paid visits to various AIDS orphanages. The headstrong actress was able to generate substantial amount of media attention for the cause.
U2 frontman Bono founded two organizations for the cause and often initiates ‘red’ events. Lady Gaga also raised AIDS awareness through her bold clothes.
