Schweinsteiger happy to be mentor for Man Utd kids
While United may not be the favourites to win their 14th Premier League trophy this season, the form of their main title rivals will surely give Van Gaal and his players plenty of confidence, as City have lost two games in a row and reigning champions Chelsea are only in 15th place.
City were expected by many to maintain their position at the top of the table this weekend, but they suffered a rather shock 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the afternoon.
Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger says he will take youngsters Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial under his wing, and backs the duo for a bright future.
Schweinsteiger was part of the Bayern Munich team that won the Champions League in 2013, as well as ending up as a losing finalist in 2010 and 2012, and he explained to United’s matchday programme that “it is always a little bit different to Premier League and Bundesliga games”.
“They are both very young but both very talented”, he said.
“Memphis and Martial can achieve a lot”.
“Of course they’ve got Volkswagen behind them, but they have a good team with a good coach” in Dieter Hecking, he said.
United did not make a great start to the 2015-16 Premier League campaign, but in recent matches they have started to play well. It is always a special night when you walk onto the field and the anthem comes on.
Schweinsteiger though did warn United not to take Wolfsburg lightly on Wednesday, as he has seen first hand how they have become a powerful force in German football: “They are really good, especially in the last three or four years when they have made big improvements”.
