Science leads to identifying woman murdered 25 years ago in Jackson County
Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 715-284-5357 and ask to speak with a detective. He took flowers to her grave each Memorial Day and tended to them throughout the summer, and he lit a luminary there each Christmas Eve.
“We truly appreciate and admire your dedication to finding out who she was”, Baez’s family said in a statement.
The case is now considered an active homicide investigation involving Milwaukee police, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and state investigators.
We thank you all for finally giving our family closure; we have waited for so long.
Officials say her body was dismembered and buried in two shallow graves, but authorities were never able to recover her skull.
There’s also the unsolved case of the headless body of a woman found in the Town of Brockway in 1990.
WXOW-TV reports investigators exhumed the remains last year and with the help of new technology at the University of North Texas Health Science Center were able to learn the victim’s identity. The information was made available to other agencies and entered into the missing persons file.
Sheriff Waldera said that authorities are “very confident ” they’ll make progress with the case. DNA testing of family members led to the identification of Baez.
The victim was reported missing in November 1990.
Baez, a mother of four, was last seen in June 1990, the sheriff said.
Jackson County Sheriff Duane Waldera isn’t saying which case it is though.
“Based on what we think we know about Ms. Baez’s life, we think that someone with some information may be living between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the Chicago area”, Fox said. Quite common for people to move back and forth between those areas. It’s still unclear whether Baez was killed in Jackson County or elsewhere, but the ongoing investigation will look to uncover more leads.
We will have more information online and in our evening newscasts.
