Scientists find evidence of recent water flows on Mars
The discovery was made using the MRO’s imaging spectrometer- a device allowing for the detection of hydrated mineral signatures on the slopes upon which the “mysterious streaks” have been observed on the planet’s surface.
Last week NASA said it would be making a major announcement today about a discovery on Mars.
Monday NASA conference revealed potential breakthrough for human hopes of finding a new home someday, as liquid salty flowing water exists on the surface of Mars.
So far it appears that the most likely origin is that water contained in Mars’s thin atmosphere is effectively condensing and running down the planet’s polar peaks.
“Looking forward, it is imperative for us to understand the source of these water features, as well as the amount”, said Mary Beth Wilhelm of NASA’s Ames Research Center.
David Bowie finally has an answer to his question – yes, there may be life on Mars.
“This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water – albeit briny – is flowing today on the surface of Mars”, added Grunsfeld.
“Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past”.
The images from MRO showed dark slops on a Martian crater, known as recurring slope lineae (RSL) that would flow through the planet’s seasons.
NASA researchers make a game changing discovery on Mars. Be it India’s maiden march to Mars or the entry of NASA’s Maven spacecraft in to the Martian orbit, everything caught our attention.
Whether that leads to life existing on the planet now depends on where the water comes from, McMahon said. Now we know, they follow the Sunday.
Scientists have long suspected that the planet might have running water.
Lujendra Ojha of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology said his team of researchers found evidence of hydrated salts, including magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate.
They say more than 4 billion years ago, Mars was covered with water 137 meters deep and that almost all of it has since evaporated into space.
