Scorching day expected for Retford – but thunderstorms could hit later
The Met Office said that Sunday was the hottest day of the year for the rest of the country following a tiresome and cold June, with new highs expected today and Tuesday.
At the minute it may be hot, hot, hot, but the Met Office has issued severe weather warnings across the country including the South West.
A statement from SEPA read: “Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to pass close to the area on Wednesday, this increases the possibility of some surface water and river flooding”.
The warning highlights the potential danger of flash flooding in the worst hit areas.
“There will then be a second bout of heavy, thundery rain that will spread up from the south on Wednesday morning”.
Some locations could see flash flooding with more than 50mm of rain over the course of a few hours.
The yellow weather warning will be in place for much of Scotland from 5pm this evening until 9pm on Wednesday.
“Frequent lightning, large hail and strong winds could be additional hazards”, forecasters add.
It continued: “All of this could lead to some flooding of homes, businesses and transport networks”.
“That also has the potential to give some quite disruptive weather, hard travel conditions, surface water flooding, potentially flash flooding and property flooding and impacts on transport and power supply too”.
“Around 30mm of rain could fall in an hour and it’s likely there could be hail and lightning too”.
Wednesday will see highs reaching the low 30Cs, but by Thursday fresher conditions from the Atlantic will bring temperatures down to the more comfortable mid-20Cs, reaching around 22C (71.6F) to 24C (75.2F) by Friday and Saturday. “There’s potential for almost a month’s rain in some areas during the time we have the warning”.
