Scores line up for Trump Vermont event in Sanders’ hometown
Trump explained his thinking in a statement: “We have more than 20,000 people that showed up for 1,400 spots”.
Though Trump’s campaign had taken pains to screen people at the door and turn away anyone who didn’t present themselves as a supporter, the Republican front-runner’s hourlong speech was still interrupted several times by protesters in the concert hall, all of whom were removed by security.
“What I’m suggesting is that what Trump has done with some success has taken that anger, taken those fears-which are legitimate-and converted them into anger against Mexicans, anger against Muslims”, Sanders said December 28 on CNN. So far, Republican presidential candidates have barely campaigned for the state’s 16 delegates to the Republican National Convention.
That came despite the Trump campaign’s best efforts to screen ticketholders based on their support for Trump, as thousands more supporters than could fit in the theater waited hours in line to attend.
If anti-Trump demonstrations broke out attendees were asked to please do not touch or harm the protester, but to instead yell, Trump repeatedly until security arrived.
“Did you get him out of here? Tell him we’ll send it to him in a couple weeks”. “They’re afraid to come up here because it has a tendency to be a little bit liberal”, Trump observed as he kicked off the rally.
Linnebur, a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, said there was nothing on his ticket that said he had to be a Trump voter. “And I said, ‘This is a private event, I am not leaving.’ They said, ‘Well, you’ll be arrested'”. You go to a Hillary (Clinton) thing and its like, boring.
He tests the crowd, asking them, “do we like Bernie?” But how about when the two young women took over his microphone?
“Yeah, don’t give him his coat”. That won’t happen with me.
You can watch his full speech from the Burlington rally at the bottom of this post.
Meanwhile, about 500 protesters gathered outside the venue to voice anti-Trump slogans.
About 50 anti-Trump protesters marched down Church Street on Thursday afternoon, chanting: “Racists, fascists, anti-gay, Donald Trump stay away”. At first, the pledge seemed to work, and Trump presided over an unusually calm and collected rally crowd inside the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, a historic 1930s Art Deco theater.
I will get rid of gun-free zones at schools, he said. I knew I was going to have some in Vermont, he mused. But I got killed the next day. My first day. There’s no more gun free zone. For months, Trump has specifically called for the elimination of gun-free zones at military installments, but his call to do the same at schools appears to be a new stance. They were swinging… Rough guy, very loud…
