Wily playmaker James Stannard put the home side up 12-0 at halftime but South Africa hit back soon after the break with a try to Kwagga Smith.
England beat U.S. 17-14 in a thrilling Pool D decider, Alex Davis, Alex Gray and captain Tom Mitchell scoring the tries in the victory.

Japan’s Katsuyuki Sakai, bottom, is tackled by Warwick Lahmert of England as he scores a try during their match at the World Rugby Sevens Series in Sydney Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016.
The Australian Sevens team were humble in defeat.

“I thought what was good was that they were smart and took that physical edge away from South Africa”, said coach Andy Friend.
