Scott Morrison fuming over Bible radio challenge
Australia’s presumptive Treasurer hit out at his mate, shock jock Ray Hadley, who tried to get him to swear on a bible over his role in Tony Abbott’s dumping as Prime Minister.
The revelations emerged in a bruising interview where Hadley enraged Mr Morrison by asking him to swear on a Bible he had been loyal to Mr Abbott.
‘If that’s what you need, then I don’t think we had a relationship you thought we had and I thought we had, ‘ said Mr Morrison, who sounded hurt at the suggestion.
“I can’t understand, Ray, why I was being offered that job when he had showed such strong support of Joe Hockey”.
‘I don’t have to swear on a Bible mate, ‘ Mr Morrison said. I’m not going to use my faith as a stunt, mate, for the program.
Mr Morrison also revealed he tried to warn Mr Abbott his leadership was under imminent threat.
He said he had not spoken with Mr Abbott since Monday night’s coup, where he briefly shook his hand and said good luck after Malcolm Turnbull won the prime ministership.
“I supported the prime minister, he offered me the job of treasurer hours out from that ballot”, Mr Morrison said.
The situation escalated as Morrison angrily replied, “I refuse to be bullied-” but was promptly cut off as Hadley hurled the book at Morrison’s face. ‘I think it’s a bit offensive for you to try and use my faith as some kind of debating point.
“Were you embarrassed by the role you played in his demise?”
“I told them I was voting for Tony Abbott, and I did”, the Minister said.
But Hadley wasn’t buying it and suggested that when they spoke before the vote, Morrison was misleading about what he knew of the challenge.
“I never sought the job of Treasurer, not once”.
“It may seem remarkable to you that someone in politics could be elevated on merit, but Tony Abbott was the only one who offered me the Treasurer’s position”. “I will not be bullied by anyone inside this place our outside this place”, Mr Morrison told waiting media after the interview. Mr Hadley demanded.
Mr Morrison took offence when he was asked to swear on a Bible.
‘At the end of the day, I voted for Tony Abbott I gave him utter loyalty for the entire time I served as his minister and his shadow minister.
Facing criticism… Scott Morrison is here pictured beside ousted PM Tony Abbott at a Sunday mass in Nauru in 2011.
With an inkling of what to expect, Mr Morrison came to the interview armed with a hard hat. According to the Abbott supporters’ post mortem it was the Morrison-bloc votes that sealed his fate.
Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese, who went up against Bill Shorten to be opposition leader in 2013, rejected questions about whether the Labor party could be better placed to take on Mr Turnbull under him.
