Scott Walker Drops Out-Urges Other Republicans to Do the Same
He will return to his job in Wisconsin as governor, where his term runs until 2018.
Walker rocketed to the front of the GOP pack in Iowa after a rousing speech at the Iowa Freedom Summit in January – and subsequently, his campaign pinned its hopes on the first state to vote in the presidential nominating process.
Walker’s early exit from the presidential race mirrors his move in 2006, when he dropped out of the state’s Republican gubernatorial primary after running out of money.
“Clearly, Mr. Trump’s message continues to resonate”.
“Once he went on teleprompter and he went on script I think is when he started to sound insincere”, WIBA 1310 Radio Host Vicki McKenna says during Monday’s live radio broadcast. It turned out to not matter on his second try because too many potential Republican voters, faced with an endless buffet of choices, never got past “oops”.
The good news for Trump and anti-establishment candidates is that Walker had collapsed to zero percent in the latest Republican poll taken by CNN. Pandering. Flip-flopping. Hiring staff who did not know him well and did not understand his record or his reputation across all segments in Wisconsin.
“He doesn’t really own a monolithic bloc of voters ready to swing toward another candidate”, said Kevin Madden, who worked for Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign.
Although he did not refer to him explicitly by name, Walker had some pointed words for fellow candidate Donald Trump.
Phil Musser, an unaligned Republican strategist, said he expected donors to nevertheless sit patient for a while. “It’s one less body to climb over”.
Experts saw potential gain for conservative candidates like Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee as well as center-right contenders such as Marco Rubio, John Kasich and Jeb Bush.
There were internal disputes within Walker’s team about how to best revive his campaign as he slipped in the polls. Someone that’s a little more responsible, and you feel has a commanding control of the situation, but you can identify with them. “They are going to scatter”, he said.
“Rubio mostly”, Erickson said in an email.
Despite his plummeting in the polls, Walker surprised everyone with his early exit. If he chooses, he might have another opportunity. Now, it’s open season.
At a brief 6 p.m. ET press conference in Madison, Wis., Walker said he was suspending his White House bid, in part, to stop the current GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
Walker’s opponents openly gossiped about the Wisconsin governor’s political challenges as they gathered in California for last week’s presidential debate.
That earned Walker a sharp rebuke from Republicans who stood with him as protesters occupied the capitol for weeks in opposition to the measure.
Walker’s fall serves as a cautionary tale for others: Don’t overestimate yourself.
Republican presidential candidate, Sen.
“Well, it means we’re down to 15”, said South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, who have not gained enough traction to get out of the undercard debates.
