Scott Walker Will Drop Out Of 2016 Presidential Race
“I don’t think he made any really big mistakes”, said Iowa state Sen. The candidate who seemed best positioned to unite the party’s establishment, tea party, and social conservative wings failed to consolidate support with any of them.
Support for Walker has struggled to keep momentum in a campaign that focused on his fight against organized labor, as the main issue in the campaign has shifted to immigration.
The super PAC told federal regulators in a filing Friday that it had spent more than $1.6 million boosting Walker this year, most recently on a $50,000 mailing to Iowa voters.
Walker was hailed at the beginning of the race for his anti-union stance and being the only U.S. governor to have survived a recall election. He’s spent the past few months disproving the generally held notion that he was the smart brother, and his poll numbers have dived almost as sharply as Walker’s. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina). He has now officially dropped out of the race for president.
Walker, who had a promising campaign, was hurt by his two weak performances during the GOP debates in August and earlier in September.
Ted Cruz, the Republican presidential candidate, said Saturday he hopes the president’s choice of secretary of the army is based on what is best for the nation. Walker campaign manager Rick Wiley was set to speak at the same event, but did not participate in light of the news.
Walker’s admission last week that he was shifting course and putting “all our eggs in the basket of Iowa” was a sharp departure from his campaign’s confident predictions earlier in the year about plans to rack up delegates throughout the South and Midwest late in the primary contest. His campaign lasted only 70 days.
Yet campaign bills were piling up, with some vendors complaining that they had not been paid on time. Basically, Walker said he was dropping out in order to allow the part of the party that doesn’t like Trump to start focusing on unifying behind a challenger strong enough to defeat Donald Trump.
Walker’s campaign hasn’t yet responded to requests for comment.
As soon as he declared his presidential candidacy less than three months ago, Walker began to demonstrate he was out of his depth. And he came across as flat and lacking in sophistication in the televised debates. One of its major donors, the Chicago Cubs-owning Ricketts family, will be up for grabs. “And if you can’t make it on television today in national politics, you’re dead”.
Donald Trump has a street fighter’s instinct for locating and then jabbing at his opponents’ weak spots – Jeb Bush’s enervated demeanor, Carly Fiorina’s poor stewardship as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard or Scott Walker’s miserable economic record in Wisconsin. I spoke with trump about the narrowing field while walker was resigning.
While Mike Huckabee is still in the race his support has not grown significantly.
