Scottish Premiership game between Celtic and Dundee could be played in AMERICA
CELTIC and Dundee could play a Scottish Premiership game in the United States as early as this season in what would be a landmark occasion for the domestic game.
Chairman Tim Keyes, who is based in Texas, and managing director John Nelms took over control of Dundee back in 2013 and are looking to spread the name of their club overseas.
The pair are in advance negotiations to play a league match in either Boston or Philadelphia next season, with the BBC reporting that all they need now is the approval of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).
The SPFL would have to approve such a switch, though it is a proposal that has intrigued Scottish football followers and could be help the league market itself.
The Dens Park Club released a statement to say that “initital discussions” have begun. “For the time being we have not been contacted with regard to the specific proposal referred to and therefore we are not in a position to comment further”. “Further, according to art. 82.4 of the Federation Internationale de Football Association Statutes, FIFA may take in any case a final decision”.
The plan has, however, been backed by Celtic fans in America.
Celtic have played a number of friendlies in North America and are said to have been looking into the feasibility of starting a franchise in the North American Soccer League, the division below Major League Soccer. Dundee’s US-based owners interested in bringing a match stateside against the biggest club in Scotland, passing up on a potential home gate to grow the league as well as their brand in the United States.
“You definitely know about the size of the club”.
