Seahawks cut cornerback Williams
Williams’ tenure with the Seattle Seahawks came to an abrupt end Monday as the big-money offseason free-agent signing was released just 12 games into his stint with the Seahawks. He signed a three-year, $18 million deal with Seattle this offseason with million guaranteed. DeShawn Shead was inserted into the starting lineup in Williams’ place and has performed well, while Jeremy Lane has added depth since being activated from the physically-unable-to-perform list two weeks ago. Williams had been underwhelming in Philly, to put it nicely, and the Eagles got rid of him in order to steal Maxwell from Seattle. A $3.5 million signing bonus and $3.5 million in base salary. Coach Pete Carroll also said Monday that Lane will push Shead for playing time.
The News Tribune confirmed from a league source that the Seahawks are cutting Williams, the veteran to whom they are paying a guaranteed $3.5 million this season.
Williams’ attitude. Seattle’s decision to release Williams now would have been an easier one had his attitude become an issue, which easily could have been the case given the circumstances. Williams was benched midway through the Seahawks’ victory over San Francisco in Week 11, then was a healthy scratch the past two weeks.
Renton, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks have released cornerback Cary Williams, the team announced this afternoon. Carroll’s comments on Monday supported those visuals. “It’s s short amount of time to catch up with the specifics of our techniques”. “He was a real pro”.
“He was a real pro”, he said. It didn’t change him at all.
Asked whether lessons learned from trying to teach a 30-year-0ld cornerback new tricks might influence further free-agent hires, Carroll said, “Possibly”.
