Seahawks cut former Green Beret, long snapper to add third quarterback
Waters was signed as a precaution after quarterback Tarvaris Jackson sprained his ankle in Friday’s preseason game.
The Seahawks Tuesday morning released long snapper Nate Boyer to add quarterback Jake Waters to the active 90-man roster.
Boyer served in Iraq and Afghanistan before joining the University of Texas’ football team and then signed with Seattle in May after going undrafted. All five of his snaps in the game were accurate and Boyer thanked the team for the opportunity afterward, saying it was an emotional moment that had significance to the servicemen and servicewomen he fought alongside. Long snappers are a small fraternity and the Seahawks already have Clint Gresham. Backup long snapper, regardless of back story, is always most expendable.
Fortunately for Boyer, the Seahawks brass gave Glazer an “emphatic yes” when asked whether or not Boyer, gunning for a long snapping spot, could actually play in the league.
“That was cool”, Boyer said, according to the Seahawks’ official website. “I enjoyed it. You never know, this might be the only one I get”.
It appears the depth chart will now be Russell Wilson, R.J. Archer, B.J. Daniels, and Waters.
The Seattle Seahawks are expected to sign former Kansas State quarterback Jake Waters on Tuesday. He also broke the record for single-season mark for all-purpose yards (3,985), despite playing with a shoulder injury his senior year.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder went undrafted this in the 2015 NFL Draft after his superb college football career with the Kansas State Wildcats, where he was a teammate of Seattle’s third-round pick Tyler Lockett.
