Seahawks nearing extension with former USU linebacker Bobby Wagner
Wagner was more straightforward, saying his personal deadline for getting a contract extension from his rookie deal is “now”. The contract ties Wilson to the Seahawks for another five seasons, and slots him just behind Green Bay Packers quarterback on Aaron Rogers on the list of quarterback salaries.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson just signed a four-year, $87.6 million contract with $60 million guaranteed.
What about other issues? That means no lingering uncertainty over Wilson’s future, and no more fretting over how an impasse would have affected the mood of a Seahawks team that opened training camp Friday. The deal will maintain Wilson in Seattle although the 2019 season.
Wilson is just another quarterback signing in an offseason full of new contracts. Michael Bennett, another player who signed a deal not too long ago (16 months ago to be exact) and is already unhappy about it, isn’t holding out, but he’s making it known that he’s disappointed that the front office is ignoring him.
A deal for Wagner probably would include a $10 million signing bonus, thus eating another $2 million of the cap.
Wagner is 25-years-old and has recorded 364 combined tackles and nine sacks in three NFL seasons. “So it was emotional to some extent, but I think in his heart he knew that we wanted this to happen, we were going to get it done, we were going to find a way and he handled himself beautifully throughout the process”. But as Carroll mentioned after a recent camp practice, numerous veteran players on the roster are only 26 or 27 years old, and the most important ones aren’t heading for free agency anytime soon.
In previous weeks, Wilson was vocal about his willingness to play for the Seahawks this 2015 season even though there was no new deal for him then.
The Seahawks are also now without the services of safety Kam Chancellor.
The flip side of his previously borderline-insulting pay-grade is that Wilson has been the NFL’s best bargain since day one, and the competition isn’t even close. Many players have lost their edge after hitting the financial jackpot, but Wilson always has been wired to keep proving his worth to those who doubt him. Less than a week after being released by the Saints because of off-field problems, Galette agreed Friday to a one-year contract with the Redskins that agent Alvin Keels wrote on Twitter is for the league minimum – $745,000 for a player entering his sixth season in the league. Wagner has racked up 100-plus tackles in three straight seasons and has been one of the key figures in Seattle’s dominance on defense over the past three years. He was named a first-team All Pro for the first time in his career, despite missing 5 games with an injury.
