Seahawks stumble, Rams rise to occasion in 34-31 OT win
And again a year ago in St. Louis.
The Seahawks needed a yard. Here are five takeaways from the 34-31 overtime win.
You see, the Seahawks’ O-line put together one of the poorer performances in that franchise’s recent memory in week one against the St. Louis Rams. This would suggest the Legion of Boom was in disarray, but despite a fantastic Nick Foles strike over Richard Sherman, and one big Tavon Austin play, the wideouts weren’t doing damage.
After a reply like that, and with the Rams in total control of the situation after claiming a 1-0 record to begin their season, the embarrassment for the Seahawks and Wilson didn’t end there.
“This isn”t me casting stones.
It sure looked like the same old Rams after Seattle overcame a 24-13 fourth-quarter deficit to take a 31-24 lead when cornerback Cary Williams came in uncontested on a blitz and blasted Foles as he was about to pass. Williams picked up the resulting fumble, and ran eight yards for the go-ahead score with 4:39 to play. “There weren”t 110 million television viewers, nor was the outcome decided on the goal line. Take this week, for example: I had a gut feeling the Broncos would win against the Baltimore Ravens, seeing as Peyton Manning has lost just two opening days since 2008 (2010 at Houston, and 2008 against Chicago), but I wanted to save Denver for when they go up against a team with not as strong of a defense as that Terrell Suggs-led purple and black squad. We fell a little short today, but looking forward to getting back to work! I imagine we’ll hear more this week. Kirk Cousins went 21 for 31 for 196 yards and two interceptions for Washington.
Lynch had 18 carries for 73 yards, success that Carroll used to back the call.
Miami trailed 10-0 in the second quarter, cut it to 10-7 at halftime and pulled even when Andrew Franks kicked a The Dolphins then forced a punt.
Um, nice try, Matt. But the Seahawks were going against the best defensive line in the league on Sunday.
Seattle has the best defense in the NFL. Luck finished 26 of 49 for 243 yards and 2 touchdowns, and was intercepted twice. Taken in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft from Kansas State, Lockett is a big play and/or touchdown just waiting to happen each time he touches the ball. Why on earth would they hand it to Lynch out of the shotgun formation?
“The odds are really diminished”, he said after the Rams gave up two returns for touchdowns against the Seahawks. Carroll sounded confident Sunday that Seattle will thrive this season. “That”s significant.
Critics squawk that Carroll (or offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, whoever you prefer to blame) deviated from what was working for the Hawks in the Super Bowl. Pete and Darrell just manage to bungle everything all the time. “They”ll find a way to blow it.
The question: Will the Seahawks’ play without Chancellor affect the way the team handles any conversations with him?
The Seattle Seahawks came into Sunday ready to erase the memory of Super Bowl XLIX and finish things the right way this time.
That never say die attitude? Few fruits hang lower. That Super Bowl loss will stay with him forever, and maybe affect his future decisions. And yet he was still pretty good-and more importantly, we don’t play another team this year close to St. Louis in terms of pass rush. You can also associate the INT intended for Marshawn Lynch as part of the problem too when you refuse to throw it deep: Rams CB Trumaine Johnson jumped the route and made a great diving interception.
