Sean Spicer makes awkward appearance at the Emmys
After making a few jokes about President Trump, Colbert mused about how to accurately count this year’s Emmy ratings.
Stephen Colbert brought his comedic A-game to host the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards and there were a ton of noteworthy moments – everything from amusing and awkward to touching and downright weird.
“It’s your fault! He never forgave you and he never will”. You know, and Alec Baldwin, obviously.
Before wrapping up his monologue, Colbert had one more surprise in store: a cameo by former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who rolled out with his own mobile podium (a la Melissa McCarthy on SNL). HBO’s “Veep” nabbed the win Sunday for the third consecutive year.
And the first award has already been announced. Elisabeth Moss won best actress and Ann Dowd a best drama supporting actress award for their work on the show.
Surprise: Donald Glover (“Atlanta”)Donald Glover topped two-time victor Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) for his first Emmy, which takes the sting off “Atlanta” missing out on upsetting “Veep” for best comedy. Colbert added that, unlike the presidential election, Emmy winners are chosen by the popular vote.
“We did have a storyline an impeachment, but we abandoned that because we were anxious that someone else might get to it first”. John Lithgow has won the Emmy for his performance in The Crown in the Best Supporting Actor (Drama) category.
Feminist dystopian drama The Handmaid’s Tale, which features several lesbian characters, was the big victor of the evening, taking home awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Elizabeth Moss, and Outstanding Directing for Reed Morano.
During her acceptance speech, Kidman said that the show with an entertainment value is also about issues. “So now, more roles for women, please!”
The British winners included Riz Ahmed, who took best lead actor in a limited series or movie for The Night Of.
The gag was met with divided opinion from social media users who were watching the show on Sunday night.
Colbert claimed if only they had given the brash billionaire an award for Celebrity Apprentice years ago he would not have challenged Hillary Clinton in 2016 and win with the help of Russian hackers.
