Sean White In, Auburn To Make Switch At Quarterback
White plays well and Auburn fans, who have been clamoring on message boards and social media for White’s debut after the disappointing play of Jeremy Johnson, are renewed with the possibilities of rebounding from a confusing first month. Auburn will be without one of its best players indefinitely. “Today is when (offensive coordinator) Coach (Rhett) Lashlee and I really made the decision”.
“We’re just trying to encourage him”, Malzahn said. He is our starting quarterback going into this game; we are going to get behind him, and I know his teammates will also.
“(White) is very accurate.
“Sean is a guy that we have felt good about for a long time”, Malzahn said. Mississippi State has lost a league-high four fumbles while Auburn has committed eight turnovers, matching Vanderbilt for most in the league. We have confidence in him.
White (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) played at University Nova South in Boca Raton, Fla.
This for a program that spent a month of last season as the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff poll. He was rivals.com’s No. 4 QB coming out of high school.
Johnson was anointed the starter after A-Day in April, and Malzahn didn’t shy away from his decision-for a while.
“Jeremy’s a competitor”, Malzahn said. “He will still get reps in practice, and he will be ready if he is called upon”.
Private quarterback coach Ken Mastrole, who has worked with White since the eighth grade, said his pupil has the business-like, calm demeanor to control his emotions in this situation.
“It is a little surprising“, Malzahn said of the change. “Because when you’re in this room with your team, it feels exactly like it did in 2013 after the LSU game”. If White plays bad, now Malzahn will have two quarterbacks lacking confidence. And certainly that was the big reason why that game ended 45-21. LSU ran for 411 yards as a team, and Leonard Fournette almost had more yardage individually than the entire Auburn offense.
Because if the Bulldogs didn’t begin the LSU game with two quarters of funk; if Prescott threw the ball in the first half the way he threw it in the second, the narrative in the SEC would be the doubling down of the Mississippi schools. “All we’re thinking about is Mississippi State and that’s the way we’re going to operate”. When Mullen arrived seven years ago, State had had won three or fewer games in six of the previous 10 seasons.
This, of course, leads to an undeniable conclusion: maybe it’s time we reassess Mississippi State. “Really, their leader, makes them go”. The first three games, we kind of figured out some things offensively and defensively. The Tigers claimed the SEC crown and earned a spot in the BCS National Championship, where they ultimately fell to top-ranked Florida State.
