Search of landfill fails to find newborn’s body
The remains of a newborn infant were lost at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, leading to an unsuccessful search at a landfill and an apology from the hospital, officials said.
“This situation is a tragedy for this family, and we are deeply sorry that we have added to their suffering”, Dr. Richard Lofgren, president and chief executive of UC Health, said in a statement.
A woman, whose name was not released, delivered a boy and a girl, at the Cincinnati hospital, Cincinnati police said.
A search of a landfill near the hospital turned up no sign of the baby’s body, according to The Associated Press, which reported the child had died an hour after birth on September 14.
CIS officials tell local 12 they believe the body mistakenly went out with the trash sometime last week.
Despite a thorough internal and police investigation, UC has been unable to track down the child’s remains to return to his family.
This situation was unacceptable and we make no excuses.
She said police weren’t involved with the landfill search.
Lofgren declared that an investigator squad appeared to be brushing over “every basic fact, every method, when action” that resulted in the experience to understand what happened.
“We have already begun to put in place steps to ensure that this kind of tragic human error can not occur again”, Lofgren said.
