Season Begins for Christmas Tree Farms

I hope you will find time this holiday season to come to Pierre to experience Christmas at the Capitol.

During the holiday season some people decorate their homes with a Christmas tree. It’s a tradition that spans centuries.

Glass shows them one area of the Pine Patch where he grows his own trees, but also has on display some from another state.

Kathy Cooper, who runs Cooper’s Tree Farm with her husband, John, and family, spent Saturday answering questions, greeting customers and pricing trees.

“It’s much easier for us”, said Sharon Flint. The numbers are out and a year ago, Americans spent more money on artificial trees than live ones.

The property has belonged to Szuber’s family for years and their overall mission is to keep this a family fun farm.

Joe Whitney said his 29-acre Christmas tree lot near Salem, Oregon gets two months of sunshine, but this year they received six months of sunshine. Tree lots will tell you their trees aren’t just any trees, and that’s why they are priced higher than the national shops.

Based in Aigburth, Passion for Flowers have Christmas trees ranging from 4ft to a whopping 10ft. “My wife, [it] took her four weeks to pick out 900 trees that weren’t burned from the lack of water”.

“I think there has been more of a move towards real trees because it’s a green thing to do”, Peter continued. “We started our family here in Austin and we want our roots to go deep-pun intended-and so we just keep it up”, said Austin resident Amanda Longtain. There are many ways to recycle your trees that give it better use than just taking it to the local landfill or burn pile.

Harris’ advice for first-timers: “The most important thing is to make sure you have enough stump to go into your stand”.

There are approximately 150 Christmas tree farms in Texas that produce 200,000 trees annually.

Maplewood Farm, Miller Tree Farm, the Herzig Family Tree Farm and the Dumas Christmas Tree Farm all opened on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
