Seau inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame
Five-time Super Bowl Champion, Charles Haley was one of the best defensive end of his era.
Junior Seau’s daughter delivered a heartfelt video tribute when she presented her late father for induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the emotional moment brought audience members to tears.
“We’re in Canton, Ohio, but this is Steeler country”, Bettis said.
Depression in the wake of severe head injuries played its role in Saturday’s (August 8) induction ceremonies at the American Football Hall of Fame, where eight legends of the game were enshrined.
I just got back in town from the NFL Hall of Fame ceremonies, and I checked out the Eagles open workout this morning, so I’ve been getting a full dose of NFL football in the last few days. And when Jerome Bettis concluded his Hall of Fame speech with the comment to his son, “There’s nothing more important than our good name”. Bettis said that he hopes he’s made his father proud.
If you ever saw him play, it was apparent that his Hall of Fame bust was promised years ago. “You have to show these guys what real football fans look like”.
Bettis had already touched on how great Faneca was, and how he needs to be considered as a first-ballot hall of famer when he becomes eligible for the honor next year. “So thank you”.
“You’re not sure how to act”, Shields said Friday. When Mr. Rooney, the 83-year-old patriarch and chairman of the franchise was introduced, the entire crowd stood and gave him the loudest and longest ovation of the night. “It’s a profession that people choose, and it comes with risk”.
Wolf spent 23 seasons with the Raiders, helping the organization to a pair of Super Bowl titles. So did actor Joe Manganiello of Mt. Lebanon. No doubt that running back Marcus Allen owes Shields a debt of gratitude for his own induction into the Hall of Fame in 2003. “In Pittsburgh, we do run the ball baby”. “And you can’t quit something that is a part of who you are”. Bettis credited former Rams teammate Jackie Slater for showing him the importance of this, and the rest of his speech turned into that kind of a message. “I was always just “Timmy” to them, not Tim Brown (football player)”. “But today, I take my medicine every day, and that’s because I finally listened”.
“My dad was my hero”.
And yet, Bettis never got too big for anybody. “He taught me how to be a man. He had two jobs and he worked to the bone, never complaining, never asking for a break, all that while supporting three children”. Dean Spanos noted that he was all about community, and his charitable endeavors are as legendary as his career.
“You were a light”, she said.
“‘Dad, you gave us your time, your presence, your love, but most of all, you gave us your heart, ‘ she said”.
“It’s a very hard thing to accept. To see the pain his family has had to endure”.
From there he made it clear that he couldn’t have reached this point without help. Gladys Bettis was diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months ago.
On Saturday, Sydney gave a shortened version of the speech on the awards stage. The McKeesport native played safety for the Steelers from 1974-87, was a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro selection. The sixth-leading rusher in NFL history didn’t want to hear any of it. Shell also won four Super Bowls as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 70s. It submits players to hyperviolence that grinds up their bodies and brains while multinational corporations sell beer and cars to hundreds of millions of fans who live vicariously through television broadcasts without having been anywhere near the playing field to witness the overpowering brutality of the game. He was eventually tackled by Mr. Roethlisberger, preventing a touchdown, and Mr. Bettis received a reprieve when Mike Vanderjagt badly missed a 46-yard field goal, sending the Steelers to the AFC Championship game.
