Sebastian Giovinco named MLS MVP
Inspired by Giovinco’s heroics, Toronto reached the MLS Cup play-offs for the first time in their nine-year history before suffering a 3-0 defeat to rivals Montreal Impact in the opening round.
Toronto FC’s attacker Sebastian Giovinco was awarded the Landon Donovan Major League Soccer (MLS) MVP of the 2015 MLS regular season.
In his first season in North America, Giovinco rewrote the Toronto FC record book while leading the league with 22 goals and 16 assists.
Todd Durbin, the Executive Vice President of Player Relations and Competition, visited the Air Canada Centre Wednesday to announce Giovinco’s prize. The former Juventus player and Italian national had a fairy tale season with scoring twenty two goals and thirteen assists for the Canadian club. “And I would like to win more”.
The Italian global, 28, had already won the MLS Golden Boot award and had been voted the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award while also earning a spot on the MLS Best XI.
Giovinco is also a finalist for the league’s Goal of the Year, with his mazy run versus the New York Red Bulls on October 14 up against a similar strike by Sporting KC’s Krisztian Nemeth.
He succeeds Robbie Keane, who won for LA Galaxy a year ago. He can break his own record by winning his fifth award this season before the weekend.
“This has been his best season so far”, the translator said for Giovinco.
