SEC teams out, Auburn tumbles in AP college football poll
Auburn avoided an upset at home with an overtime win over Jacksonville State but tumbled from No. 6 to No. 18.
This is not to say that the SEC doesn’t have any elite teams, but the overall strength of the conference has been grossly overstated. No. 4 Michigan State receives two first-place votes after beating Oregon 31-28. Oregon wasn’t punished too severely for their competitive road loss, they fall just two spots (but remain in the Top 10) to number nine. TCU is 3.
Oklahoma moved up three spots to No. 16 after coming from 17-0 down to win at Tennessee, 31-24 in double overtime. And for the first time in 100 years, Notre Dame does not have a Big Ten team on its schedule after having dropped Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue. Additionally shifting in: No. 23 Northwestern, No. 24 Wisconsin and No. 25 Oklahoma State.
S. CAROLINA: Quarterback Connor Mitch will miss Four-6 weeks with a separated shoulder and a badly bruised hip.
While Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas A&M gobbled up their respective cupcakes, the league’s exhaustive day was somewhat salvaged by a thrilling 21-19 LSU win at Mississippi State. The Eagles are also 2-0 and have allowed just three points this season, but they haven’t faced an offense the quality of the Seminoles and this is a great test for both programs.
“When Griff hits the ball, he kicks the ball well”, Coach Nick Saban said after the game with the Blue Raiders. There are a lot of “cupcake” games on the schedule, but these four games have the chance to really shake things up.
Kentucky (2-0, Previous Week: 13th) I’m still not sure what to make of Kentucky.
Saban seems to be sticking by Griffith, for now. We think he can get the job done.
The other Top 25 matchup to be played in Week 3 is No. 8 Notre Dame, which lost quarterback Malik Zaire for the season, hosting No. 14 Georgia Tech. The Razorbacks have only been improving throughout the Bret Bielema era and after beating Texas in last year’s bowl game, they were a dark horse pick to run the table in the West. But this loss sets them back. Yes, the Fighting Irish escaped with a final-minute touchdown when backup quarterback DeShone Kizer found Will Fuller for a 39-yard score to clinch the 34-27 victory over Virginia, but it was bittersweet. Prosise replaced Tarean Folston, who was knocked out for the season last week with a knee injury. Dak Prescott, who completed 65% of his passes for 335 yards and a touchdown, proved why he was once a popular Heisman contender. The defense, which was supposed to be much better under Will Muschamp, surrendered 438 yards 10.7 yards per completion.
Coach Kyle Flood announced the suspension Sunday.
