Second walkout against police crimes planned for Chicago
The defense attorney for Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke, indicted on six counts of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a black teenager, told reporters on Friday he would seek a change of venue for the officer’s trial.
Reports are the indictment alleges that Van Dyke acted “without lawful justification” in shooting McDonald at a time when he understood his actions “created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm”. 18, 2015, hearing in a Cook County criminal court follows Van Dyke’s indictment by a grand jury earlier this week.
The federal civil rights investigation is gathering steam just as the justice system is doing so against police officer Jason Van Dyke.
Prosecutors initially charged Van Dyke with one count of murder hours before a video of the 2014 shooting was released. The Justice Department said it plans to investigation allegations of misconduct concerning the Chicago Police Department’s policies in the wake of the fallout from the video’s release, and protesters have called for Mayor Rahm Emanuel and State Attorney Anita Alvarez to be taken from office as well.
At the hearing, prosecutors are expected to read the full indictment that was handed down Tuesday.
Use of force by law enforcement officers has become a focus of national attention due to a series of high-profile police killings of black men, mostly by white officers in US cities. The phone number is 844-401-3735.
Department of Justice officials have finished two days of meetings in Chicago as they begin a civil rights investigation into the city police department.
U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced the investigation on December 7 amid protests over the release of a video of the shooting of Laquan McDonald.
Meanwhile, the fed’s investigation into the Chicago Police Department is underway.
