Seconds Of Summer comment on MCR song comparisons
The 5SOS guys played their latest single She’s Kinda Hot for the first time live in Los Angeles, and finished the concert with their famous cover of What I Like About You.
It’s been quite a quick ascension for the group that was formed by Clifford, Luke Hemmings (vocals, guitar), Calum Hood (bass) and Ashton Irwin (drums) in Sydney, Australia in 2011 while they were students at the same school.
There were surely some adults at The Palace on Wednesday night, August 19, who shuddered when 5 Seconds of Summer declared we are the voice of the new generation in its song Permanent Vacation.. That’s how we got into music, by the passion and the energy that those bands put across to their fans.
And after rolling through stadiums with One Direction, Irwin says his band was well primed to headline bigger places on its own. Not long after that, One Direction offered the opening slot on its 2013 world tour to 5 Seconds of Summer.
5 Seconds of Summer considers itself a punk-pop band in the tradition of bands like Green Day and Blink-182, but aligning itself with One Direction was sure to get the band labeled a boy band/teen pop group. Members of 5SOS (that’s what they call them for short) are credited on 11 of the 12 songs on the band’s self-titled debut album. “It’s really diverse. There are lots of key sounds we go to”.
Speaking recently to Billboard, 5 Seconds of Summer guitarist Michael Clifford has addressed the comparisons between the two tracks, explaining where the similarities are and suggesting that they’re essentially giving fans what they want. The pre-ordering facility for the album has already been started and it was made clear that instant download of new song “Fly Away” will be available with each pre-order. It’s definitely an evolution from the last album. “There was a man who came up to us and asked us what we were doing, and you can hear his footsteps in the track, which I think is cool”.
