Seguin scores in shootout and Stars beat Canucks 3-2
Seguin scored the only goal of the shoot-out and Niemi kept out all three Vancouver attempts to add to his 34 saves. Seguin picked up an assist on Jamie Benn’s power play goal in the first period and scored the only goal of the shootout. The Canucks, 3-2 winners in Minnesota on Wednesday night, have not won two straight games in almost a month.
Elsewhere, the Arizona Coyotes edged past the Calgary Flames 2-1 in overtime to bring up coach Dave Tippett’s 500th career victory and the Columbus Blue Jackets enjoyed a similar success against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The difference was special teams. Vancouver forward Alex Burrows came out this week and said they are going to have to have all 20 players on their game and stop the Dallas offense if they’re going to have a chance to win and while that game plan has been implemented 22 times already against he Stars only five have been successful. Daniel Sedin, who scored in the second period for the Canucks, assisted with a pass across the goal mouth.
The Stars are off to the best start in franchise history at 18-5-0 and they have not lost two consecutive games.
Vancouver controlled the puck for much of the first period but failed to score.
“The power play got the last (goal), penalty kill had a big kill in overtime”, Desjardins said. “Maybe we don’t get the win in the end, but there’s no quit”. Dallas has been spectacular all season long and can extend their lead to seven points in the Central division with a victory but against a Minnesota team that has been very good at home over the years they know it’ll be a tough task.
Vancouver tied the game after Jannik Hansen stole a pass from John Klingberg and passed across the slot to Daniel Sedin, whose wrist shot beat Niemi. Spezza received a pass from Klingberg on the left point, then skated into the right circle before beating Miller top shelf to his short side in an impressive show of marksmanship. Entering the game, Dallas captain Jamie Benn was second with 32 points, linemate Tyler Seguin was third with 31 points and Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin stood fourth with 25 points. Vancouver drew even early in the second when Daniel Sedin scored his 11th of the season with a tap-in at the near post. Vancouver RW Adam Cracknell played in his 100th National Hockey League game…. It was Benn’s NHL-leading 17 goal of the season at 15:27 of the first period.
