Seinfeld actors surprise birthday gift
Just three days before his 67th birthday this November, James Anthony Calder passed away after a two year battle with Stage IV cancer. “I would say thank you [to them] for not only lifting my family’s spirits during a disgusting time, but thank you for helping bring awareness to the need for more funding to lung cancer and other terminal forms of this disease”. Calder was touched by the personal connection his father received from Richards, who, despite some coaxing from Calder for a character video, preferred for his birthday wish to Jim to remain out of the public eye. “I did try to coax him to create a video message as well but he shared that he wasn’t interested in the publicity and just wanted to help me wish my dad a happy birthday”, he said. We never dreamed we would be able to get in touch with any of the top four lead actors on the show, let alone some of the actors who played supporting yet legendary characters.
Several actors also reached out to the Calder family privately, including Michael Richards (Kramer) and the late Jerry Stiller (Frank Costanza).
Calder’s family had planned to wait to show him the videos from the cast but ended up sharing them the day before he passed. “You did that very well …” At the request of the man’s son, who wrote about their kindness for the Huffington Post, the actors sent videos of themselves talking to Calder in character. Instead of telling him he couldn’t have any soup, Thomas went in a different direction. To see them all, you can visit Calder’s YouTube page.
Calder writes that the Seinfeld-filled birthday was a unexpected surprise for his father, adding that the man could really feel the “love and support”.
“You have a wonderful son who clearly adores you”, said the woman who originated Elaine Benes.
When James’ wife returned home after Jim’s death, she switched on the TV and saw that one of Jim’s favorite Seinfeld episodes was playing, and thought of it as a sure sign that her husband was at peace.
“In a world where my father’s own oncologist could use a lesson in human kindness and compassion, we found a wealth of it from cast members of Seinfeld and readers”.
