Sen. Grassley Sets Deadline for Kavanaugh Accuser to Respond to Testimony Request
Sen. Chuck Grassley did not name the witnesses in a letter Wednesday. Even the moderates like Arizona Senator Jeff Flake and Susan Collins in ME who originally were pushing for these hearings to happen are now saying that there doesn’t need to be an FBI investigation.
Walker and Mallot, running for re-election as independents, said in a joint statement that Kavanaugh’s confirmation could jeopardise health care, labour laws and the Indian Child Welfare Act. Ford said Judge was at the party when the assault occurred. Kavanaugh denies the allegation.
Mr Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasely Ford, have both been asked to give evidence on Monday, but it is not clear if Ms Ford will appear.
President Trump said it’s “terrible” that Senator Feinstein did not raise the allegations sooner, but said he’s “totally supporting” his nominee.
Jennifer Rubin writes reported opinion from a center-right perspective for The Washington Post. “No one should make light of this situation”.
“That’s very puzzling to me”, she said about the uncertainty of Ford’s appearance.
Democratic Senator Doug Jones said Mark Judge, Kavanaugh’s high school friend, should be subpoenaed if he refuses to testify.
Ford has said she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she will testify.
Judge submitted a letter through an attorney to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that said he had “no memory of this alleged incident”.
The sexual assault allegation should be fully investigated, Sack said, but in the meantime, Ford shouldn’t be dismissed as less than credible. They would argue that they’d offered Ford several options for describing her accusation, but that she’d snubbed them.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the panel should have the Monday hearing without or with Ford. “We are standing with her regardless of what our political background is because we see this as a nonpartisan issue”, Semerad Guerry said. Ford decided not to speak publicly out of concern for herself and her family.
“There has been delay and obstruction of this process at every turn and with every argument available”, Grassley wrote.
Plans for a dramatic, clarifying hearing featuring Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh and the woman who accused him of sexual assault have descended into chaos and partisan bitterness. At the heart of the investigation is what Ford says.
But a source who supports Kavanaugh notes that it was Feinstein who declined to release the letter back in July before the hearings, and rejects any notion that the Federal Bureau of Investigation should step in and investigate first.
Ford also told the Post that the assault ended when Judge jumped on top of her and Kavanaugh, knocking them off the bed and allowing her to flee to the bathroom. Grassley didn’t provide further details on their investigation.
He said Wednesday it would be “very interesting”. On this. I can’t say that everything is truthful. I mean, we have activists, the Democratic base, seizing this to try and derail Kavanaugh’s confirmation – Republicans, President Trump seizing it to try to do the opposite, to get him confirmed. The state party has been reviewing the accusations, which he has denied, for three weeks.
The confusion and bickering between Democrats and Republicans set off by Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations are casting a darkening cloud over Kavanaugh’s hopes of being swiftly confirmed and cementing a conservative majority on the court in a huge win for President Donald Trump.
Clinton says that makes it hard to “avoid the appearance of insult” against Ford. The FBI went to work questioning Hill and others, and ultimately the Judiciary Committee convened hearings at which she and Thomas appeared.
Collins said Tuesday that she wanted Kavanaugh and Ford’s lawyer to be able to question the opposing side. In trying to jam her into their abbreviated, one-sided process, Senate Republicans open the door to far more unsafe options, where the American people get to judge for themselves whether she is credible.
“We’re going to proceed – there’s no question about it”, Hatch said.

What could swing the #MeToo momentum the other way is if Ms. Blasey Ford refuses to testify.
Mr Trump spoke on Tuesday at a joint press conference with the president of Poland.
It adds that since coming forward, Ford, in addition to receiving support from around the country, has “been the target of vicious harassment and even death threats”.
