Sen. Lindsey Graham suspends GOP presidential campaign
“I’ve hit a wall”, he acknowledged in an interview with CNN, and said it was time to consider “getting out and helping somebody else” in the presidential race.
He made the announcement on Twitter and YouTube Monday morning.
Graham did make headlines over the past six months, battling out with Donald Trump and his fascistic, anti-Muslim statements.
Graham, a member of the conservative class that swept into control of the House in 1994 has, at times, joined Democrats on other high-profile votes.
The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, S.C. reported today that Graham’s biggest hurdle was not making it to the top tier of televised debates and that as a result, his poll numbers remained low.
But Graham’s campaign failed to gain traction, even as terrorism became a growing concern among voters in the wake of the terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, California, and Paris.
“Graham had one good point during his campaign: Whether you’re an evangelical Christian or Caitlyn Jenner – the radical Islamic extremists of ISIS want to kill you all the same”, Angelo said.
Graham told CNN the rules hurt his campaign, noting that it’s hard for candidates that have never run before or come from political royalty to reach the main stage.
Graham is known for his quick wit and famous for his one-liners (just ask Princess Buttercup about his retort from the last debate), but he was sober, serious and emotional as he described his decision to leave the race just weeks before the voting begins.
Graham said he got into the campaign to turn back the tide of isolationism rising in the Republican Party and said enormous progress was made on that front in December. “I hope as he leaves the race our country listens to his counsel”.
Graham did name check two of his former opponents, however, when asked whom he trusted to fight for men and women in the military. “As sorry as I am to see Lindsey’s candidacy end, I understand his reasons, and I’m as proud of him as I’ve ever been for his exemplary service to our party and our country”.
