Sen. Tom Cotton to House Republicans: ‘Start Over’ on Health Care
Democrats, health care professionals, and the insurance industry have many questions about the Republican replacement plan to replace Obamacare. Seth Chandler warns it could put care out of reach for older Americans. Nearly instantly it received pushback from both the far right and the left. Rauner has told reporters he fears IL will be “left in the lurch”, while Emanuel has predicted “more people are going to lose health care”. Those uninsured in 2017 will have to pay $695, or 2.5% of their income, whichever is higher.
Republicans said they don’t have official coverage estimates yet, but aides from both parties and nonpartisan analysts have said they expect those numbers to be lower.
GOP leaders have long said that they believe Medicaid is fiscally unsustainable and a spending cap is necessary to fix its finances.
It is true that the American Health Care Act repeals significant portions of Obamacare. “It allows insurance companies to assess a 30% penalty on those who don’t keep continuous coverage for 63 days, which is an individual mandate by another name”. This curious line of argument reemerged on Tuesday at a White House press briefing, when the two pieces of legislation-Obamacare and the GOP replacement plan-were prominently displayed alongside each other for the goal of emphasizing the difference in length. At the same time, there would be less incentive for healthy people to buy insurance.
House Republicans released the bill Monday.
On the other hand, it would ensure that winners of lotteries, disproportionately played by the poor, wouldn’t get a free ride.
“This bill sends a loud and clear message: Tax cuts for special interests and the wealthy matter more than your health care”, Wyden said. Republicans want to use reconciliation as a vehicle for their health care overhaul to prevent a filibuster by Senate Democrats. “They’ve got to make those decisions themselves”. The White House will no doubt have some ideas as well. They say this is just another government subsidy creating a new entitlement program and that there is no difference between the tax credits and the subsidies now offered by Obamacare. Last week, he led reporters on a search for the health care bill, crossing from the Senate side of the Capitol to the basement room on the House side of the complex where the bill supposedly was being drafted.
“We provide the American people with what we’ve asked for and what they asked for: greater choice, lower cost, and flexibility to choose the plan that best suits their family’s needs”, Walden said.
In a separate letter, a large doctors’ group, the American Medical Association, also urged Congress to reconsider reducing insurance for the poor. A new interactive county-by-county map from the Kaiser Family Foundation allows people to compare the financial assistance they received under the Obama reforms and what aid would be likely under the Republican plan. “Once we say that we’re not actually saving the federal government money as a result of this bill, it’s just hard to defend picking on older people”. Can’t wait to see what the Congressional Budget Office figures will show as to what the costs of this plan will be.
JOHN YANG: And then, finally, Sabrina Corlette, what’s your view on the changes that are coming in Medicaid, or would be coming in Medicaid if this plan is passed?
The second group that the American Health Care Act helps is businesses because the new plan will not mandate them to provide health insurance, and in turn, companies can provide the kind of insurance they think their employees need. As Trump said in January, “You have deductibles that are so high that after people go broke paying their premiums, which are going through the roof, the health care can’t even be used by them because their deductibles are so high”.
